Introducing the New Lavit Beverage System

Introducing the New Lavit Beverage SystemHere at Galaxie Coffee, we are always looking at new products and services that we believe will benefit our customers. To that end, we are extremely proud to announce we are now offering the brand-new Lavit beverage system. This is no average water cooler. It is an entirely new technology that combines a traditional high-end water cooler concept with the convenience of single cup beverage service.

Lavit works on a very simple principle. It is a water cooler capable of offering three choices: still water, sparkling water, or specialty beverages (both still and sparkling) – on a cup-by-cup basis. Regardless of your choice, you will enjoy a cold drink that is both refreshing and delicious.

How It Works

The Lavit sparkling system is very simple to use. Just place a cup under the dispenser and choose either still or sparkling water. Press the button and watch your glass fill with cold, refreshing water. If you prefer one of their specialty beverages, insert a beverage capsule and then follow the instructions on the machine’s display.

Creating your own sparkling beverages is very similar to making a cup of coffee with one of our single-cup machines. If you can insert a capsule and press a button, you will have no problem using the Lavit beverage system.

A Sustainable Option

There is a lot to love about the Lavit system, including the fact that it is a sustainable option for water and flavored beverages. First and foremost, Lavit’s multi-patented, award-winning capsules are made using 100% recyclable aluminum. Eliminate virtually all waste by tossing used capsules in with the rest of your company’s recycling. Each cartridge uses 1/7th the amount of aluminum when compared with a soda can.

Clean Water for All

If what we have described thus far is not enough to encourage you to try the Lavit sparkling water cooler, we have one more carrot to tease you with: for every Lavit capsule purchased, the company behind this incredible machine donates to a charity known as One Drop.

One Drop exists to help provide clean drinking water to those in need throughout the world. That means every time you enjoy a great tasting sparkling beverage from your Lavit sparkling water cooler, you are also helping to provide clean water for someone else.

Galaxie Coffee is thrilled to be able to offer the Lavit sparkling water cooler to our customers throughout the greater New York area. If you have any questions about this great new machine, do not hesitate to reach out to us today. We would be more than happy to help you better understand the benefits of the Lavit concept.

In addition to sparkling water and beverages, Galaxie Coffee provides full coffee service along with teas, fruit juices and other beverages, and even break room and janitorial supplies. You can see a complete product list on our website.

What Will It Take for Corporate America to Embrace Eco-Friendly Paper Products?

What Will It Take for Corporate AmericaThe historical animus between corporate America and the environmental movement is no secret. For more than a decade, their competing interests have led them to butting heads more often than not. Yet lately it seems as though corporate America has started to warm up to the green message as increasingly more companies are beginning to make efforts to make their products, services, and business models more environmentally friendly. Eco-friendly paper products are a good example.

It would have been unheard of for a restaurant chain to use something like a paper straw five or six years ago. Everything was plastic back then. But paper straws are catching on slowly but surely. The same goes for eco-friendly cups, plates, utensils, etc. American corporations are even looking at eco-friendly packaging that goes beyond just substituting wooden pallets for plastic.

The question is, what will it take for corporate America to fully embrace eco-friendly paper products rather than continuing to give them only cursory attention? There are really only two things that will do it:

1. Public Pressure

A few years ago, the Home Depot big-box DIY store faced tremendous pressure from environmental groups over the continued sale of lumber taken from old-growth forests. It took a couple of years, but those environmental groups eventually convinced corporate management to stop selling the lumber.

If a large corporation can be convinced that something they are doing is not acceptable to customers, they will stop doing it. Right now, there is no desire to shift to eco-friendly paper products because companies do not perceive that their customers care about their current choices. The minute the public begins demanding a change, that change will come.

We are seeing many corporations form working committees to support their “green” initiatives. Most often it’s the millennial employees spearheading these projects. Galaxie Coffee fully supports these efforts and as prices come down due to increased usage, we are lowering our retail pricing as well.

2. A Healthier Bottom Line

Like it or not, businesses of all sizes – be they small companies like Galaxie Coffee or huge, global corporations – exist to make money for their owners. The driving force behind just about everything a corporation does is the bottom line. If eco-friendly paper products could be introduced, manufactured, and used in such a way as to improve the bottom line, you’d better believe corporate America would jump on board.

By the way, the desire for healthy bottom line is not a bad thing. It is what keeps all our employers in business; it is what ensures we all have jobs to pay our bills. Appealing to corporate America and its desire for a healthy bottom line is a very legitimate way to convince companies to embrace eco-friendly paper products. The makers of those products just have to find a way to make what they sell more desirable to corporate buyers.

Eco-friendly paper products are catching on with American business slowly but surely. In the meantime, our job at Galaxie Coffee is to continue to provide our customers in the greater New York area with the best possible office coffee service. We would be happy to provide service for your company, regardless of size or need.

3 Coffee Industry Trends to Watch for in 2017

Coffees of the World – Part 1Thus far, 2017 has been a very good year for the coffee industry. America’s favorite hot beverage (and sometimes cold, too) continues to dominate the market thanks to innovative new products emerging alongside our long-time favorites. Interestingly enough, we have noticed that some of the 2017 trends predicted toward the end of last year have not come to fruition. Others certainly have.

Below are three coffee industry trends to keep an eye on through the remainder of 2017. All three are showing good promise as ongoing trends of the future rather than merely flashes in the pan.

1. Cold Brew Replaces Iced Coffee

Iced coffee enjoyed a lot of success when it was first introduced. However, there is something a bit unseemly about pouring a hot beverage over ice, thereby diluting its flavor as the ice melts. Enter cold brew. Cold brew coffee has been gaining ground on its iced counterpart since the start of the year.

The appeal of cold brew is a medium bodied flavor without the bitterness of hot brewed coffee. And for those who love iced coffee, cold brew is a product that invites them to enjoy their coffee without having the flavor diluted by melting ice.

2. Nitro-Infused Coffee

Take your favorite coffee drink and put it on tap and you will create a very interesting beverage that coffee lovers are flocking to try. That’s right, infusing coffee with nitrogen and serving it from a tap is the coffee equivalent of beer on tap. Restaurants and cafés are loving this new drink because they can serve it to customers without as much cream and sugar. Coffee drinkers are warming up to it because nitrogen-infused coffee has a frothy, foamy head and a texture that is very similar to its alcoholic cousin.

3. Socially Packaged Ready-to-Drink

The third trend is only half about coffee. The other half is about packaging. We are seeing a trend among makers of ready-to-drink products focusing heavily on new options for packaging that make their products really pop on the internet. What’s behind this trend? The tendency of people to share every aspect of their lives on social media. Ready-to-drink coffee makers want packaging that looks attractive in photos so that when customers take selfies or snap pictures of themselves having a meal with friends, their products look good in those pictures.

Creating packaging that looks good on social media is marketing genius. Social media is now the number one way people communicate with friends and family, and the truth remains that a picture is worth 1,000 words. Creating something that looks good when posted to social media can only help boost a brand.

Here at Galaxie Coffee, we will be keeping an eye on the trends for the remainder of the year and into 2018. In the meantime, we invite you to consider us for your office coffee service. We carry a full range of hot and cold beverages, breakroom supplies, and janitorial supplies.

What Makes For A True Coffee Addict

The Increasing Importance of Having a Break Room

The Increasing Importance of Having a Break RoomIs there someplace at work you can go when you need to take a break? A surprising study from 2014 showed that a majority of U.S. workers don’t take breaks during the day. Still, many feel they would be more productive if they were able to do so. Enter the employee break room.

There is an old idiom in American office culture that talks about meeting around the water cooler to discuss ideas. Often it’s last night’s Game of Thrones or Blacklist episode that is being discussed. Twenty years ago, this was thought to be a waste of time. In today’s office environment, this collaboration and discussion is looked upon favorably. We would suggest there is a better way to encourage collaboration among employees and allow them to take a break away from their desks and computers: give them a break room. Make it comfortable with great seating, maybe add foosball, air hockey or ping pong – and now you have the environment you’re looking for.

Too Few Taking Breaks

The previously mentioned study conducted in 2014 by Staples showed that 55% of U.S. workers don’t feel they can leave their desks to take a break. Approximately 20% don’t take breaks out of a sense of guilt. Some 59% of survey respondents indicated that more breaks would improve their happiness at work; 43% said more breaks would boost their personal happiness; 37% said regular breaks would improve their health.

Too few people take regular breaks despite the fact that we all know we should. It is not good, either physically or mentally, to sit staring at a computer screen for four straight hours. It is not healthy to be stuck in a cubicle and isolated from other human beings for long stretches of time. Humans need to get up, walk around and interact.

Break Room a Perfect Place

An employee break room is a perfect solution to employees not taking breaks because it combines the best of the office water cooler and meeting room. A break room is space where employees can socialize with one another in a setting free from telephones and e-mail. It is a space that naturally fosters collaboration without employees feeling like they have to do so when they get together.

The reality is that workers will naturally collaborate if you just let them. If you try to force it, collaboration becomes another part of the mundane workday that they have to slog their way through. But if you allow employees to simply be, in a relaxed space that does not constrain them to think or act a certain way, they do naturally what so many companies try to force.

A good break room is an open, comfortable space with plenty of seating, a coffee machine, perhaps a microwave, a refrigerator and don’t forget the games. Never underestimate its power to make your employees more happy and productive during the work day. Galaxie Coffee can help you with beverage service by providing modern, updated equipment and a full line of coffees, teas, and other beverages. We also stock break room supplies as well.

The Effect of Coffee Consumption on Longevity

The Effect of Coffee Consumption on LongevityIt makes sense that what we put into our bodies by way of food and drink affects how our internal systems function. It also makes sense that putting good things in should increase average lifespan by helping the body maintain itself as nature has designed it to do. To that end, coffee is one of those good things. Numerous studies have shown that moderate coffee consumption contributes to longevity.

One of the most recent studies was released in 2015. Conducted by researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health, the study explored the risk of mortality among both regular and non-coffee drinkers. The results were not surprising to people who have been following this idea for quite some time. In fact, the results were in line with several previous studies.

Lowering the Risks of Mortality

For the record, the clinical definition of ‘mortality’ is simply the state of being dead. But for these kinds of studies, the idea is to look at dying at an age earlier than average. Understanding and addressing the causes of early mortality is what enables us to extend average life expectancy.

Getting back to coffee, the Harvard researchers discovered that people who drank 3 to 5 cups of coffee per day exhibited a 15% lower risk of mortality as compared to those who did not drink coffee at all. A previous study conducted by the National Institutes of Health showed that the risk of mortality among those who drink 4 to 6 cups per day was reduced anywhere from 10% to 16%.

The Mechanisms Behind It

It is pretty clear that regular, moderate coffee consumption lowers the mortality risk significantly. But why? Researchers haven’t pinpointed a specific answer, but they do cite plenty of legitimate possibilities. For example, research has shown that some of the compounds in coffee can reduce the risk of both stroke and type II diabetes.

Research has also shown that coffee contains more than 1,000 known compounds that could lower mortality, including compounds known as polyphenols. Polyphenols possess antioxidant properties; they also affect gene expression, control inflammation, regulate the liver and fat cells, reduce obesity, and even improve brain function and cognition.

In short, the mechanics behind coffee adding to longevity are directly related to how compounds in the beverage affect body function. These compounds improve function and thereby reduce the risks of various kinds of diseases and genetic abnormalities that would typically contribute to mortality.

It should be noted that research of this type is normally done with a focus on straight, black coffee. Adding sugar and various kinds of creamers can both mitigate some of the benefits and create problems of their own. Also note the idea of moderation. It is possible to overdo it with caffeine.

Top 5 Coffee Industry Trends for 2017

Top 5 Coffee Industry Trends for 2017We are now a couple of months into the year, and already some interesting trends are developing in the coffee industry. Here at Galaxie Coffee, we follow those trends for obvious reasons. Below are the top five just now emerging. Some will undoubtedly continue to grow and significantly impact the industry this year while others will simply fade away. It will be interesting to see how each of them fare.

1. Adding Nitrogen to Cold Brew

Both the National Coffee Association and research company Mintel agree that cold brew will be very strong in 2017 while iced coffee begins to decline. But Mintel goes one step further by predicting the introduction of nitrogen to cold brew. A few national coffee chains are already using the trick to create a creamy cold coffee beverage that is rather unique. If they can make it work, we expect more companies to be experimenting with nitrogen cold brew.

2. Marketing Will Focus on the Experience

Millennials are now the single largest demographic group in America despite the aging population of baby boomers. As such, the coffee industry will be targeting millennials quite a bit more this year. That means focusing the message on the social experience of coffee rather than brewing that morning cup of joe before heading off to work. Focusing on the experience will be seen in everything from packaging to advertising. There will also be less emphasis on price, given that millennials are more likely to freely spend for an experience they appreciate.

3. A New Emphasis on Coffee Processing

With the industry now focusing more on millennials, they are also looking at new ways to present coffee. We expect to see a greater emphasis on coffee processing to create new flavors and styles. Processing occurs between harvest and grinding; it includes everything from roasting to aging.

4. Greater Demand for Bottled Coffee

Though iced coffee ought to decline while cold brew grows, both trends could be overshadowed by higher demand for bottled coffee. Known in the industry as ready-to-drink (RTD), this coffee product generated revenues in excess of $2 billion in 2015. Late last year, Coca-Cola and Dunkin Brands even entered into a partnership to bring new bottled coffee products to market in 2017.

5. The Convergence of Coffee and Alcohol

Lastly, younger coffee drinkers have been looking for the local coffeehouse and the bar next door to merge for a long time. It looks like 2017 could be the year for such an enterprise. Industry watchers expect more coffeehouses to start serving alcohol in 2017. Some of them will undoubtedly find ways to infuse their coffee with alcohol to create unique, new beverages.

We expect our own emerging trend here at Galaxie Coffee: growing opportunities to serve more customers as we work hard to introduce the Galaxie name to more offices and work sites throughout the greater New York area. If you are looking to add coffee and beverage service to your workplace, we would be happy to serve you.

Can Drinking Coffee Help You Lose Weight?

Can Drinking Coffee Help You Lose Weight?Perhaps you have heard arguments in favor of using coffee as some sort of weight loss supplement. As the thinking goes, drinking coffee as your primary beverage during a weight loss campaign can help you lose weight by suppressing your appetite. But is it true? And if so, how much coffee would you need to drink to realize any genuine benefits from doing so?

There are opposing opinions on both sides of the question. So to get to a credible answer, we consulted the Mayo Clinic website. According to contributor Katherine Zeratsky, R.D., L.D., caffeine may help with weight loss efforts somewhat, but there is not enough evidence to prove that increased caffeine intake results in any amount of significant weight loss or helps keep weight off.

What People Say about Caffeine

Proponents of using coffee as a weight loss supplement point to the caffeine found in the beverage as being the helpful ingredient. Caffeine is found not only in coffee but also in a long list of other beverages including cola, tea, energy drinks, etc. Even makers of weight loss pills put caffeine in them.

Caffeine allegedly works as an appetite suppressant, thereby helping you eat less. But as Zeratsky points out, the suppressing effects of caffeine are only temporary. Unless you are constantly drinking coffee throughout the day in order to keep the level of caffeine in your system stable, there will not be enough of an appetite suppressing effect to help in the long run.

Coffee is also pushed as a weight loss supplement in the belief that caffeine has thermogenic properties. Thermogenesis is the process by which your body creates heat as it digests food, burning calories as it does so. Again, Zeratsky says there is insufficient evidence to prove that the thermogenic effects of caffeine are strong or consistent enough to be of any help for weight loss.

Use Caffeine Wisely

It is possible that there is anecdotal evidence of caffeine (specifically coffee) helping people lose weight. The fact is there are always some things that seem to work for a small handful of people even if they do not work for everyone else. So both Zeratsky and the Mayo Clinic suggest that anyone who intends to use coffee or caffeine-containing products to help lose weight do so wisely.

As for coffee specifically, using it as a weight loss supplement dictates that you drink it black. It will not help at all if you load it up with cream, sugar, and all the calories that come with them. Also be careful of specialty coffees. These tend to be high in both calories and fat.

Here at Galaxie Coffee, we are in the coffee business because we love coffee. If drinking coffee is helping you lose weight, good for you. We are here to supply our clients with the best beverage service in the greater New York area, weight loss debates notwithstanding. We would be happy to supply your office with a full range of beverages and break room supplies.

Take Anything…But My Coffee

Take Anything...But My CoffeeGovernments imposing bans on certain foods in order to protect us from ourselves is not all that unusual. From New York’s trans-fat ban to California’s ban on foie gras (which was later rescinded), the food police are a group that never seems to sleep. But coffee? Why would anyone try to ban what is arguably the most loved beverage in the universe?

Believe it or not, coffee has been the subject of numerous ban attempts in the past. According to writer and comedian Emmy Blotnick, there have been no fewer than five such incidents throughout history. We appreciate that none of them actually succeeded long-term. You can take away a lot of things, but please don’t take our coffee.

From Religion to Health Concerns

Knowing that a government would attempt to ban coffee is one thing, understanding why such a ban would be considered is something else entirely. Keep in mind that coffee consumption began primarily as a religious practice in Africa and the Middle East. That leads us to the first known coffee man put in place in Mecca during the early 16th century. The government at the time believed that coffee was potentially intoxicating and could lead to radical thinking that drifted outside religious norms.

There were also religious concerns about coffee when it first arrived in Europe. Church leaders attempted to convince Pope Clement VIII to ban it under the auspices of protecting the church and its members. They claimed that coffee was satanic in nature. However, the pope disagreed after trying some himself. His declaration that coffee was delicious is partly credited for its widespread acceptance across Europe.

Other coffee bans throughout history include a 1623 action in Constantinople by Murad IV, a mid-18th-century action in Sweden that banned both coffee and coffee paraphernalia, and a 1777 action by Prussia’s Frederick the Great. Of the five attempted coffee bans listed here, only the Prussian ban was not related to religion or health. Frederick wanted to get rid of the caffeinated beverage because he believed it got in the way of beer consumption.

What You Don’t Know Will Kill You

Sometimes, what you don’t know can kill you. That’s not the case with coffee. A lack of understanding about caffeine in centuries past led governments and scientists to make decisions about coffee that were totally unfounded. It’s very similar to absinthe bans of the last few centuries.

Coffee is a beverage that is both delicious and good for you when consumed in moderation. So go ahead and take anything you want, except our coffee.

Without stating the obvious, Galaxie Coffee loves coffee, which is why we do what we do. We serve the greater New York area with the finest coffees, teas and other beverages along with a full range of breakroom products. We will continue to do so as long as coffee remains legal in this part of the world – which should be forever. Contact us for more information about arranging coffee service for your office.
